H.E.L.P.S. Program

Handicap Education, Learning & Peer Support

Knowledge, community and opportunities are vital for people to thrive in challenging circumstances. Our H.E.L.P.S. program supports the areas of peer support, sponsorships and social activities.

Education & Peer Support: Every month our organization runs a virtual peer support group, “Heart to Heart.” It is an incredible opportunity for amputees to share, listen, relate, grow and collaborate in a positive learning environment. We proudly invite experts to present information related to health, wellness, and limb loss specific topics. Annually, we cover important topics to optimize mental, physical, medical and social aspects of amputees’ wellness.

Sponsorships: We are proud to offer amputees sponsorships for registration, lodging and travel to the annual Amputee Coalition National Conference. The Amputee Coalition National Conference is held every August at different locations nationwide and is the only consumer-focused event that creates the opportunity for people living with limb loss and limb difference to interact with a breadth of solutions on the market. It is the premier event for the limb loss and limb difference community, During the conference, attendees engage with vendors, touch and feel the latest prostheses on the market, and leverage that experience to make informed decisions about their care and needed supports. Amputees who attend the conference get the opportunity to experience a sense of community among thousands of people with similar experiences of limb loss, connect to peer support networks, enhance their learning, access vendors and interact with new and innovative prosthetic devices and other technologies.

Social Activities: Our beneficiaries become family, especially when they share amazing experiences together. These events are wonderfully uplighting for amputees to attend as they merge wellness with friendship. Whether it’s surfing, sailing, horseback riding, visiting salt caves, practicing yoga, or any other amazing venture- amputees always leave feeling more invigorated, supported, and hopeful for their future. The relationships built at these events and the motivation they experience are beautiful and long-lasting outcomes.

A H.E.L.P.S. Story

“My name is Nelson Thomas and my life took a dramatic turn on March 5, 2024. That was the day I became an amputee. It was a tough pill to swallow, but I wasn't alone in this journey. A mutual friend introduced me to Christina, who has been nothing short of an angel in my life. She welcomed me into this supportive community of amputees with open arms.

The impact of their kindness was immediate and profound. There were days when life seemed unbearable, but knowing that I had a support system to lean on made all the difference. They were there for me, providing me with not just emotional support, but also ensuring I had basic necessities like food and shelter.

One of the most significant moments was when they helped me secure a place to live. I was struggling to find a suitable home, one that would accommodate my new lifestyle. But they stepped in, and before I knew it, I had a roof over my head. It was more than just a house; it was a safe space where I could heal and grow.

Being part of this program has not only improved my quality of life but also given me hope for the future. The uncertainty of what lies ahead can be daunting, but I've found solace in the camaraderie within our community. We uplift each other, share our triumphs and setbacks, and most importantly, we give each other hope. This journey has taught me the power of unity and the strength that lies in accepting help. And for that, I'm forever grateful.”
