A Mentor Who Understands Exactly
What You're Going Through

H.E.L.P.S. Program | Handicap Education, Learning & Peer Support

Our peer mentors are amputees themselves. They have navigated the same fears, frustrations, and milestones you are facing now, and they are here to walk beside you every step of the way.

The Challenge No One Talks About

When most people think about amputation, they think about the physical recovery. But research consistently shows that the psychological and emotional impact of limb loss is just as significant as the physical challenges, and often more difficult to navigate.

Approximately 1 in 4 amputees experience significant anxiety or depression after surgery. Many describe feelings of isolation, grief, anger, and uncertainty about the future. The medical system is built to address physical rehabilitation, but psychological support is often an afterthought. Most amputees leave the hospital without a clear connection to anyone who has been through what they are about to face. That is the gap peer mentorship fills.

Published research on peer support for individuals with limb loss consistently finds that amputees who connect with a peer mentor report improved outlook on life, better coping strategies, reduced isolation, and greater engagement with their rehabilitation.

In short: knowing someone who has been where you are, and seeing them thrive, is one of the most powerful interventions available. It costs nothing, carries virtually no risk, and changes everything about how a person approaches their recovery.

What This Program Includes

One-on-One Peer Mentorship

You are matched with a trained peer mentor who is an amputee. Your mentor understands the physical challenges, the emotional weight, and the questions you do not know how to ask yet. This is not a one-time visit. Your mentor stays connected with you for as long as you need, checking in regularly and adjusting support as your journey evolves.

Heart to Heart Virtual Support Group

Every month, LLMH hosts a virtual peer support group on Zoom called Heart to Heart. It is an open, welcoming space for amputees to share, listen, relate, and learn. We regularly invite experts to present on topics related to health, wellness, prosthetics, mental health, and limb loss specific subjects. It is free, and you can join from anywhere.

Conference Sponsorships & Social Activities

We sponsor amputees to attend the annual Amputee Coalition National Conference, covering registration, lodging, and travel. We also organize social activities throughout the year — surfing, sailing, horseback riding, yoga, and more — that build lasting friendships and reignite a sense of possibility.

How to Get Started

Getting matched with a peer mentor is simple and takes about 5 minutes.

Tell Us About Yourself

Fill out our support request form with basic information about your situation — what stage of your journey you are in and what kind of support would help most.

We Match You

Our team reviews your request and matches you with a peer mentor based on your amputation type, location, interests, and specific needs. We look for the best possible fit so you connect with someone who truly understands your experience.

Your Mentor Reaches Out

Your peer mentor contacts you directly. From there, you build a relationship at your own pace. Some talk weekly, some check in monthly. There are no rules — just genuine support.

A Community Story

"A mutual friend introduced me to Christina, who welcomed me into this supportive community with open arms. They were there for me, providing emotional support and ensuring I had basic necessities like food and shelter. Being part of this program has not only improved my quality of life but also given me hope for the future."

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a new amputee to get a mentor?

No. Our mentorship program is available to anyone living with limb loss, whether your amputation happened last month or twenty years ago. Many people reach out during a difficult transition, a new surgery, or simply when they want to connect with someone who understands.

What does a typical mentorship relationship look like?

Every mentorship is different. Some people prefer phone calls, some prefer texting, and some connect through video chat. Your mentor will check in with you regularly, and you can reach out to them anytime. The relationship develops naturally based on what works for you.

Are your mentors trained?

Yes. All LLMH peer mentors are amputees who have been trained to provide supportive, non-clinical guidance. They are not therapists or medical professionals in this role — they are people who have lived through what you are experiencing and can offer perspective, encouragement, and practical advice.

Is the Heart to Heart group for new amputees only?

Heart to Heart is open to all amputees at any stage. We have members who are pre-surgery, newly post-op, and years into their journey. The group creates a safe, positive space for sharing and learning, facilitated by LLMH founder Tina Hurley.
