Why Home Accessibility Matters
One of the most overlooked challenges of limb loss happens the moment you walk through your own front door. Suddenly, stairs that were routine become dangerous. Bathrooms that were perfectly fine become impossible to navigate safely. Doorways that never felt narrow are now too tight for a wheelchair. The kitchen becomes an exhausting obstacle course.
It is shockingly common for amputees to be discharged from the hospital without adequate consideration for whether their home is safe or accessible. Many rely on sponge baths because they cannot get their wheelchair into the bathroom. Others fall trying to hop into a shower without grab bars or a transfer bench. Some go without proper meals because they cannot sustain the energy required to get groceries, prepare food, and clean up. Others miss critical medical appointments because they cannot safely get in and out of their own home.
These problems are all solvable. They require modifications, services, and equipment that cost money most amputees do not have on top of their medical bills. The H.O.M.E. program exists to eliminate those barriers. We fund the renovations and home services that restore independence, safety, and dignity inside your own home.
What This Program Includes
Accessibility Renovations
We work with community partners to improve safety, access, and autonomy inside your home. Past projects have included: widening doorways to fit wheelchairs, installing ADA-compliant showers with grab bars and transfer benches, adding elevated toilets, building exterior ramps, installing first-floor stackable washer/dryer units, replacing stairs with accessible alternatives, and much more. Every renovation is planned around your specific living situation and mobility needs.
Home Services During Recovery
The weeks and months after surgery are when you need the most help. We fund essential home services including grocery delivery and meal services to ensure proper nutrition during recovery, home cleaning services so you can focus on healing instead of housework, and handyman services to keep your home operational, safe, and comfortable while you recover.
Safety Equipment & Assistive Devices
We provide or fund the equipment that makes daily living safer: grab bars for bathrooms and hallways, shower seats and transfer benches, non-slip mats and flooring modifications, bed rails and power lift recliners, and other assistive devices based on your individual needs. These items may seem small, but they prevent falls, reduce caregiver strain, and make an enormous difference in daily independence.
How to Get Started
Step 1: Tell Us About Your Home
Fill out our support request form and describe the challenges you are facing at home. Is it stairs? Bathroom access? Meal preparation? Getting in and out of the house? The more detail you can share, the better we can plan.
Step 2: We Assess and Plan
Our team evaluates your situation and connects with community partners to design a modification and service plan tailored to your home, your mobility, and your recovery timeline. We handle the coordination so you do not have to.
Step 3: We Make It Happen
From installation of grab bars to full bathroom renovations, from meal delivery to ramp construction, we fund and manage the work. Our goal is for your home to feel like your home again: safe, comfortable, and fully yours.
A Community Story
"Less Leg More Heart installed a new ADA-compliant shower, a high toilet with grab bars, and converted my closet into a laundry space with a new stackable washer and dryer. They even built an ADA-compliant ramp on the outside of my house. These modifications were life-changing. Now I'm not just surviving, I'm thriving. I go to work every day, interact with my coworkers, and feel more confident about my future than ever before."

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to own my home to qualify?
No. We work with both homeowners and renters. For renters, we focus on modifications that can be made with landlord approval or that are portable. For homeowners, we can undertake more permanent renovations. We assess each situation individually.
How quickly can modifications be completed?
It depends on the scope of work. Simple installations like grab bars and shower seats can often be done within days. Larger renovations like ramp construction or bathroom remodeling may take a few weeks. We prioritize urgent safety needs and work to complete modifications as quickly as possible, especially for amputees who have just been discharged from the hospital.
Can you help with temporary needs during recovery?
Yes. Our home services, such as meal delivery, cleaning, and handyman support, are specifically designed for the recovery period. These can begin immediately and continue as long as needed. Not every need requires a permanent renovation.
What if I am not sure what modifications I need?
That is completely normal. Many amputees do not know what they need until they are home and encountering challenges. Simply reach out through our support form and describe what you are experiencing. Our team will help you identify the right modifications and services based on your situation.
