H.O.M.E. Program

Home Outfitting, Modification & Enhancement

Limb loss presents many additional challenges within the home, especially during the acute medical recovery period. It is shockingly common for amputees to be discharged home without food security, access to their bathroom or the ability to safely navigate into, out of or within the home. Many individuals rely on sponge baths to clean themselves due to doorways that are not wide enough to fit their wheelchair into their bathroom; fall trying to hop into a shower without safety or accessibility equipment; go without food or eat food that hinders their health because they cannot sustain the energy required to go get food, get it in the home, cook it, and clean up after; suffer from traumatic wounds from falls related to trying to clean their home while they are recovering; missed doctor appointments because they cannot get into or out of their home due to stairs they cannot traverse safely; and so many other problems. All of these issues are easily remedied but cost money out of pocket, which most amputees do not have. Our H.O.M.E. program provides amputees with funding for home services and accessibility renovations.

Home Services: Our organization proudly provides funding for groceries and meal delivery, home cleaning services, and handyman services to keep amputees’ nutrition optimized and their homes operational, safe, and comfortable as they recover from their limb loss surgery.

Accessibility Renovations: We eagerly work with community partners to improve safety, access and autonomy for amputees within their homes. Projects can include widening doorways; outfitting bathrooms with elevated toilets, grab bars, transfer benches, shower seats; ramps; beds; power lift recliners; 1st floor stackable washer/dryer sets; etc.

A H.O.M.E. Story

“Coming home after my amputation surgery was a daunting experience. I was now a BK (below the knee) amputee, bound to a wheelchair and unable to navigate the steps in my own home. I felt trapped, unable to access the second level where my bedroom was or the basement where my washer and dryer were located. Even the simple act of using the bathroom became a challenge.

That's when Less Leg More Heart stepped in. After meeting with Tina, she promised that her team would figure out a way to help me. True to her word, they were there for me when I had a doctor's appointment the following week, providing a team of strong people to help me exit and re-enter my house. But they didn't stop there. The team at LLMH devised a plan to redesign my interior and install an ADA compliant ramp on the outside of my house.

They installed a new ADA compliant shower stall and extra high toilet with grab bars in my downstairs bathroom. They even converted my main floor closet into a space for a one piece stackable washer/dryer and installed a new full size unit.

These modifications were life-changing, allowing me to regain my independence and significantly enhancing my quality of life at home. Now, I'm not just surviving, but thriving. I go to work every day, interact with my co-workers, and feel more confident and positive about my future than ever before. Being part of Less Leg More Heart has given me hope and a community of fellow amputees to share my experiences with. I am so grateful for their support, compassion, and understanding.”
