October with Heart: Awareness, Action, and Amplifying Voices
October is always a big month for Less Leg More Heart. It’s a season of awareness, celebration, and gathering our community together for one of our biggest events of the year: the Roaring for a Cause Gala. This year, we’re weaving together three important themes—Disability Employment Awareness Month, National Physician Assistant (PA) Week, and World Mental Health Day—to highlight how they uniquely connect to the limb loss community.
Disability Employment Awareness Month: Ability at Work
For people living with limb loss, employment is often more than a paycheck—it’s purpose, independence, and dignity. Unfortunately, amputees face barriers that many don’t see: workplace inaccessibility, stigma, and fewer opportunities for advancement.
At Less Leg More Heart, we believe in breaking down those barriers. Through peer mentorship, advocacy, and home and workplace accessibility support, we help amputees step into careers where their skills and passion shine. This month, we’re lifting up stories of amputees who have reclaimed their professional lives and showing employers what real inclusion looks like.
National PA Week: Honoring Our Roots
October 6–12 is National Physician Assistant Week, a celebration that is especially meaningful for our founder, Tina Hurley, who dedicated her career as a PA before founding Less Leg More Heart. Tina’s journey from clinical care to nonprofit leadership is a powerful reminder that healthcare doesn’t end at the hospital doors.
Her PA training and compassionate care are embedded in everything we do—from medical advocacy for our beneficiaries to ensuring amputees have access to holistic care options. Honoring PA Week means honoring our roots and recognizing how medical professionals and nonprofits can partner to heal beyond medicine.
World Mental Health Day: No One Alone
On October 10, the world pauses to talk about mental health. For amputees, the stakes are high: studies show higher rates of depression, anxiety, and isolation after limb loss.
At Less Leg More Heart, we know the solution is connection. Through our Heart to Heart virtual support groups, peer mentorship program, and beneficiary follow-up, we create safe spaces where amputees can share their struggles and victories. Mental health isn’t a side issue—it’s central to recovery and thriving after amputation. This World Mental Health Day, we’re reminding our community: you are not alone, and healing is possible.
Gala Season: Roaring for a Cause
All of this momentum builds toward our 3rd Annual Gala, Roaring for a Cause, on November 1 at Castleton. It’s not just a party—it’s a night where awareness turns into action. Guests will celebrate hope through our beneficiary stories, and invest in a future where amputees don’t just survive, but thrive.
With every raffle ticket purchased and every donation made, we are writing the next chapter of impact together.
